1978-1985

Lecturer at the Institute of Geography and Planning, Free University, Amsterdam. Most lectures involved research methodology issues.

1985-1995

Associate Professor at the Department of Human Geography, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, University of Amsterdam. Lectures in the field of research methodology and urban geography. Contributions to several specific courses, such as the specific Ph.D. courses. Supervision of Ph.D. students.

1995-

Professor of Social Geography, University of Amsterdam; lectures in research methodology, urban geography, metropolitan studies; supervision Ph. D students, lectures in the online European colloquium Eurex, and in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Masters Programme (in co operation with Berlin, New York and London).


Research activities

1978-1985

Institute of Geography and Planning, Free University, Amsterdam. Research was aimed at urban issues, dissertation in 1985.

1988-

Universiteit van Amsterdam. Urban Geography. Research focus: international comparative analyses in the fields of dynamics in metropolitan areas and the impact of neighbourhood on social opportunities; spatial segregation; and conditions for the creative knowledge city. Over the years I was involved in several large European research programmes: EU URBEX; EU COST CIVITAS; EU UGIS; EU RESTATE; EU Neighbourhood Trajectories. I supervised several NWO funded projects.

1989-1993

Scientific coordination and management of an interuniversitairy and interdisciplinairy research stimulation programme ‘Urban Networks’ (on urban transformation processes).

1995-1997

Director of the Amsterdam Study Centre for the Metropolitan Environment (AME), University of Amsterdam.

1994-1999

Member of the board of directors and general board of the Netherlands Graduate School of Housing and Urban Research (NETHUR).

1997-1998

Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences, University of Amsterdam.
